What Are Spark Groups?

A group of Christ’s followers united in prayer and mission to demonstrate and declare the gospel of Jesus and make disciples from within a specific people group. A Spark Group is a community on a mission of Kingdom expansion from within a particular pocket of students.

What if Jesus became the main focus of conversations and life on a campus? It is possible for the message and works of Jesus to fill an entire campus. This is a gigantic vision but it happens one sphere of a campus at a time.

Church is not just something you attend…it’s something you are. Jesus said the Kingdom of God is within believers. The good news is within us. A college is not just one big community. It is hundreds of student, faculty, and staff communities put together.

Spark Groups are ‘simple churches’ or missional communities formed by two or more believers in these communities focused on these communities. They are incarnational in that they arise out of and focus on the communities they desire to reach. It’s the church in its most localized and organic form.

A Special Note For Staff of Churches and Parachurch Ministries:

Would you like your church or ministry to share Jesus with even more students, faculty and staff who don’t currently follow Him? As staff of campus ministries and churches we have primarily practiced attractional methods. We host large group weekly meetings, events, and even small group bible studies hoping that those who don’t follow Jesus will be ‘attracted’ and come to us.

Much of our outreach is focused on inviting students to these events. This is a good strategy which should continue but it is not a complete one. We should also give large amounts of focus and energy towards ‘go to’ or missional strategies which are contextually embedded within different subcultures on campus. What if you could see multiple miniature versions of your church or ministry all throughout a campus?
